What is Reflexology?
Reflexology might have some roots in the ancient civilizations of China, India and Egypt. But the “zone theory” as we know it today was created by Eunice Ingham, a nurse and physiotherapist in the 1930s.
Ingham based her theory on the findings of William H Fitzgerald, a nose, ear and throat specialist in the early 1900s. By dividing the body into zones, she correlated pressure points on the foot to specific body and organ zones. Reflexologists divide the body in 10 equal vertical zones: 5 on the right and 5 on the left. Through manipulation of areas in the foot, corresponding body areas within the same zone can be influenced.
The therapist uses gentle to firm pressure or thumbwalking in order to achieve balance in all body systems. You might be asked to breathe deeply into certain organ points for added benefit.
